Susan Steinmetz

As a surfer for the past seventeen years, I have developed a style and repertoire of maneuvers that I have honed in the breaks growing up around my home in Palos Verdes, and abroad. I have gained my contest experience first through high school contests and then later in the NSSA. I surf regularly in NSSA southwest and various Pro-Am contests with solid results.

After surfing extensively through Baja and Hawaii, I traveled for the first time to South Africa in 1993. I lived and surfed there for seven months. The opportunity to surf various reef and point breaks helped to develop my style and stamina in all kinds of conditions. My travel experience also includes Costa Rica and Indonesia, which I have been to twice and once to Panama. Though I have surfed competitively and traveled, my experience goes well beyond the wave.

I have been teaching Physical Education for the past six years. I am currently teaching at Manhattan Beach Middle Schol. My constant love and commitment to the sport of surfing has helped me maintain a healthy body and positive outlook which I know the children I teach respect and admire. This year I have been able to gain some great experience judging some of the NSSA contest. This experience has given me a deeper understanding of the scene behind competitive surfing. It has helped me focus on a slightly different level to enhance my results as a competitor. Surfing has also maintained a level of fitness for two other sports in which I regularly enjoy, soccer and running.

Currently, I am competing in the NSSA explorer southwest season. After reaching 4th place last year in the southwest and gold coast divisions. Which qualified me for western championships and nationals. I look forward to this year's competitions and to qualify for nationals. I feel my positive outlook and solid results will help me maintain my image as a positive role model for kids who are active.
