MARK KERINS: THE PRIMAL ONE
Mark Kerins (pronounced Care-ins) has Irish blood in him. Watching him play volleyball on the sands of the AVP tour brings to mind images of a warrior battling for victory Ð not giving up until he has either won or lost. Anyone who has watched and listened to him play has heard his primordial and passionate grunts as he pounds the ball to the sand. It is this exuberance and hard hitting that led AVP announcer Jim Arico to coin the nickname ÒThe Primal OneÓ for Kerins. Kerins has won many times including two 1st place AVP victories. Kerins (with partner Henry Russell) defeated Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh in the Cape Cod final in July of 1997. In August of 1998, Kerins (with partner Canyon Ceman) defeated Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego in Muskegon. As early as high school, Kerins was demonstrating his ability and will to win. Playing Middle Blocker for Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach earned him Volleyball Monthly magazineÕs selection as one of the top 50 high school players in the country. This ÒFab 50Ó selection in 1986 was confirmed when the NCAA Division I powerhouse Long Beach State coaching staff recruited Kerins to play Outside Hitter on their 49er team. At Long Beach State, Kerins was bestowed with All-American honors three times in a row! After graduating from Long Beach State University with a Bachelors Degree in Speech Communication, Kerins played a couple of years on the US National Team before making his way to the AVP Tour. Kerins ascended the AVP ranking from the time he was a rookie on the AVP Tour in 1993. He finished 1999 ranked 16th and while he had no 1st place finishes in 1999, he placed consistently high. This achievement of climbing to the 16th ranked position on the AVP Tour in 1999 and finishing 5th at the year-end King of the Beach tournament is notable in itself. But there is another side to Mark Kerins. MarkÕs passion for volleyball is only overshadowed by his devotion to family. He may be The Primal One on the volleyball court, but he is a gentle family man off the court. When Mark is not competing in AVP tournaments, he resides in Oceanside (near San Diego) with his wife Gabrielle and two daughters. Summer was born October 13, 1996 and Skye was born April 21, 1999. Mark works 40+ hours a week for Reynolds and Reynolds selling business forms. Somewhere he finds the time for his family, for his more than 40 hours a week of work, and for his training to be able to be a constant competitive force on the AVP Tour. Look for Kerins to tear-it-up as he makes his bid for another tournament win in 2000. Smack Sportswear is proud to have sponsored Kerins ever since he was a rookie on the AVP Tour. Smack
