Lloy's Corner: 2017 Volleyball Requests

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!! It’s Lloy, here!

What did 2016 bring us in the volleyball world?  Well, It brought us 3 Olympic Bronze Medals.  It brought us new NCAA VB champions (Stanford and OSU).  It brought Team Pineapple back to back PVL Championships (self promotion 🙂 ).

So, the real question is: What will 2017 bring us???

Here are a five things I would like to see happen in 2017.

1. After 40 plus years, USA volleyball has a new leader.  So, I hope that new CEO Jamie Davis takes the game of volleyball to new heights.  And not just women’s NCAA volleyball.  I mean: indoor, beach, Men’s NCAA, club and all grass roots programs.  We need a complete upgrade!!!  Let’s see what happens.

2. Lets stop changing the rules every year!!  New substitution rules, new uniform rules, new net rules, new hawkeye rules.  For the love of God, can we just play the game!!!!  Bring the white ball back, real scoring and let’s battle for 3.5 hours.

3. Someone needs to explain to me why we have so many organizations trying to run youth club volleyball.  USAVAAUJVA, are there more???  Why can’t the entire club world play under one flag???  Don’t tell me it’s the insurance:)

4. Can every state in the USA please play by the same club rules???  Here in Indiana we can only have 3 girls from the same HS on the same club team and the HS coach can’t coach them. Meanwhile, states right next to us can have as many girls from the same HS on the same team as they want!!  Plus the HS coach can coach up to three of them at a time.  Totally not even playing field.

5.  Lastly, (and I know I will catch grief for this, if not some of the other stuff above:) what’s the deal with the back slide???  Are we so sure that girls can’t hit a D ball that we have to run back slide/pipe in the 4-2’s??  All I know is Brazil’s women’s Olympic team is pretty good and they hit the heck out of the D.  I train my female teams to hit the D with front 1 or 31.  Not saying I am right, I just saying never saw a men’s team win using a back slide.  So, why do we insist the women do?

Just some things to think about.  As always, I don’t know if I am right or wrong about things.  I was just asked to give my opinion.  So, I did:)

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2017!
